Abstract

This article presents a theoretical reflection on theory of mind (ToM) and its configuration in adulthood, as well as an approach to the evidence regarding its components, both in childhood and adulthood. This discussion involves considering that the ability to infer others’ mental states manifests qualitatively differently in childhood and adulthood. Evidence is presented regarding the neuroscientific basis of ToM, and, different theoretical approaches are addressed, particularly the executive approach, which views theory of mind as an executive function (EF). It is concluded that, while EF is necessary for the configuration of ToM, it is not sufficient for adequate mentalistic performance.
