Resumen
Desde la presentación de los 11 casos de autismo por Leo Kanner en 1943, esta discapacidad ha sido motivo de innumerables investigaciones, publicaciones y cambios tanto a nivel diagnóstico como de intervención, muchas veces controversiales que si bien han permitido conocer y aclarar diferentes aspectos del cuadro también han ocasionado confusión sobre todo a padres y profesionales de distintas áreas ya que con el tiempo se han incluido y excluido otros diagnósticos dentro del autismo. Inicialmente se hace una revisión de los orígenes del síndrome del trastorno del espectro autista, seguidamente se presenta el panorama actual representado por lo planteado por la DSM-5 (2013) y la propuesta de la ICD-11 como un trastorno del neurodesarrollo; seguidamente se describen los principales temas relacionados con el autismo con cierto tiende histórico, las consecuencias y predictores futuros y las tendencias de investigación actuales. Si bien los avances han sido positivos, se tiene la sensación de que el tema todavía no ha sido resuelto y que se debe continuar con estudios que, sobre todo permitan desarrollar mejores estrategias de intervención.
